On May 20, the production of my first studio CD came to a close. The album, entitled "On The Canal", features Jeremy Flagg on drums, Justin Dicenzo on electric bass, Eddie Collison on trumpet, and Randy Dukes on saxophone, with gcp on keyboards and vocals. The songs, which range in influence from Steely Dan to Peter Gabriel to Bruce Hornsby, were composed between 1995 and 2000, pared down from over two hundred songs to the eventual nine that made the cut. They are as follows: |
> no surrender
> the new class
> temptations of another year
> saturn falls
> fagen street
> ideja
> running after your train
> going
> all i got left

Engineered and mixed by Chris Brudzinski at Webster University, the entire CD was completed in five studio dates. First, the drums came in. Jeremy knocked out seven tunes in six hours, providing a lush, full sound without any layered tracks and without any chord or rhythm charts.
By the time Justin came in to lay down the bass tracks, charts had been written, and he nailed it. Just nailed it. And, at 8:30 on a Saturday morning, no less.
Eddie and Randy came in late one Saturday night after I had been laying down lead keys tracks, and dropped down a couple of solos (Eddie on "Running After Your Train" and the outro on "All I Got Left"; Randy on the bridge of "Fagen Street") which totally spiced up the tracks. Randy's solitary alto line, over the smoky rhodes and drums, fits perfectly with the vibe of the song, as evidenced in the chorus: "...down with all the poets and the beats/all the way down on Fagen Street."
It was fun laying down the organ tracks over the piano lead on "The New Class", "Running After Your Train" and "All I Got Left". I'm a total sucker for the swirling B3 sound, which I liken to a big bucket of barbecue ribs. Tasty.
As for the vocals....what happened in one take is what we got. Go figure!
Enjoy!
